Indonesia is not the first country that comes to mind for electronics, but it has quietly become a serious exporter. Factories on Batam island, near Singapore, and in industrial estates across Java make cables, phone equipment, batteries, capacitors and, increasingly, solar cells for buyers around the world.
In 2025 Indonesia exported US$19.2 billion of electrical and electronic equipment under HS chapter 85, up 27.5% on 2024. That makes electronics the country's fourth-largest export group, behind only coal, palm oil and iron and steel. The single biggest driver was solar: exports of solar cells and semiconductors more than quadrupled.

Electronics HS codes: what Indonesia exports
HS chapter 85 covers almost everything electrical. These are the codes that matter most for Indonesia:
| HS code | Product | Typical Indonesian exports |
|---|---|---|
| 8541 | Semiconductor devices, including photovoltaic (solar) cells and modules | Solar cells and panels, diodes, transistors |
| 8517 | Telephone and network equipment | Phones, routers, network parts |
| 8543 | Electrical machines with individual functions | Electronic modules and devices not covered elsewhere |
| 8544 | Insulated wire and cable | Wiring harnesses, power and data cables |
| 8507 | Electric accumulators (rechargeable batteries) | Lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries |
| 8532 | Electrical capacitors | Capacitors for electronics makers |
| 8528 | Monitors and television receivers | TV sets |
You can track monthly shipments for each code under HS 85 electronics.
The biggest product lines
Six product lines make up almost 60% of the chapter. Solar cells and semiconductors are now clearly the largest, followed by phone equipment, electrical machines and cables.

| HS code | Product | Export value 2025 | Share of HS 85 | Change vs 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8541 | Solar cells & semiconductors | US$3.31 bn | 17% | +318.7% |
| 8517 | Phones & network equipment | US$2.16 bn | 11% | +9.2% |
| 8543 | Electrical machines n.e.s. | US$1.88 bn | 10% | +16.3% |
| 8544 | Insulated wire & cable | US$1.84 bn | 10% | +4.3% |
| 8507 | Batteries (accumulators) | US$1.19 bn | 6% | +52.5% |

The solar boom
Indonesia's solar exports took off after the United States put anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on solar panels from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam in 2024–2025. Manufacturers, many of them Chinese-owned, moved production to Indonesia and Laos to keep supplying the US market. Within months, the two countries went from under 1% of US solar module imports to around 29%.

Batteries were the second-fastest grower among the big lines, up more than 50%.
Who buys Indonesian electronics?
The United States is by far the largest single market, taking almost a third of Indonesia's HS 85 exports. Solar and semiconductor devices alone made up US$2.17 billion of that. Singapore comes second, reflecting Batam's close links with Singapore's electronics supply chain, and Japan is third, buying mainly cables and wiring.

| Market | HS 85 exports 2025 | Share | Top products |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | US$6.03 bn | 31% | Solar cells & semiconductors (US$2.17 bn), electrical machines (US$1.01 bn), phone equipment (US$866 m) |
| Singapore | US$2.22 bn | 12% | Electrical machines, phone equipment, semiconductors, capacitors |
| Japan | US$1.63 bn | 8% | Insulated wire & cable (US$892 m), capacitors (US$180 m) |
| China | US$0.50 bn | 3% | Semiconductors, integrated circuits, switching apparatus |
| Rest of world | US$8.81 bn | 46% | – |
2026: US solar duties change the picture
The solar boom has drawn a response from Washington. A US trade case against solar cells and panels from India, Indonesia and Laos moved quickly through 2026.
| Date | Step | What it means for Indonesia |
|---|---|---|
| Early 2026 | Preliminary duties set | Rates of about 86% to 143% depending on the producer |
| September 2026 | Final rates confirmed | Anti-dumping margin of 94.36% for all producers, plus anti-subsidy rates of 73.2% to 173.7% |
| October 2026 | US trade commission confirms injury | The case goes ahead |
| 2 November 2026 | Duty orders due to take effect | US customs starts collecting cash deposits on Indonesian solar cells and panels |
These duties are added on top of existing US tariffs, so Indonesian solar exports to the US are likely to drop sharply from 2027. Indonesia is pushing a large domestic solar programme, starting with 17 GW and aiming for 100 GW, which could absorb part of the factories' output.
What this means for buyers and exporters
- Expect solar exports to shift. With heavy US duties coming, Indonesian solar makers will look for buyers in other markets and at home. Buyers outside the US may find more supply and better prices.
- Cables, capacitors and phone parts are steady. These lines grow more slowly but are less exposed to trade cases, and Japan and Singapore are reliable buyers.
- Batteries are one to watch. Indonesia's nickel and battery investments point to more battery exports in the coming years.
- Search by exact HS code. HS 85 is huge and varied, so 6- or 8-digit codes are the only way to find the right suppliers or buyers.
