Indonesia is best known for exporting commodities such as coal and palm oil, but it is also one of Asia's biggest car-making hubs. Assembly plants around Jakarta and West Java build MPVs, SUVs and pickups for Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and even Japan.
In 2025 Indonesia exported a record 518,212 fully built (CBU) cars, up 9.7% on 2024, while sales at home fell. Add motorcycles and parts, and vehicle exports under HS chapter 87 reached US$12.2 billion, making it the country's fifth-largest export group. Here is a closer look.

Where Indonesian cars go
Most Indonesian cars stay in Asia and the Middle East. The Philippines is the largest market by value, followed by Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. Brands also ship to the United Arab Emirates, other ASEAN countries, Latin America and Africa, while Daihatsu sends the Gran Max to Japan under the Mazda Bongo name.
| Market | Share of car export value* |
|---|---|
| Philippines | 27.6% |
| Vietnam | 16.2% |
| Saudi Arabia | 15.5% |
| United Arab Emirates | 5.5% |
| Other markets | About 35% (Latin America, Africa, Japan, rest of ASEAN) |

Motorcycles: fewer units, higher value
Indonesia is one of the world's biggest motorcycle producers, and Honda alone has capacity for more than 5 million bikes a year in the country. Exports of fully built motorcycles peaked at about 804,000 units in 2021 and have eased since, to 544,133 units in 2025.
But value tells a different story. Motorcycle export value rose 35.5% in 2025 to US$1.62 billion, which points to a shift towards larger, pricier models. Indonesia also shipped about 8.1 million motorcycle kits (CKD) for assembly abroad, and motorcycle parts exports grew almost 20%.

| Year | CBU motorcycles exported |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 700,392 |
| 2021 | 803,931 |
| 2022 | 743,551 |
| 2023 | 570,004 |
| 2024 | 572,506 |

After a record 2025, fully built car exports have levelled off. From January to September 2026 Indonesia exported 371,260 CBU cars, down 2.7% on the same period of 2025. September was especially weak, at 33,888 units (-28.4% year on year). At the same time, exports of car kits and components jumped.

The growth in kits and parts shows Indonesia becoming a supplier to assembly plants in other countries, not just a seller of finished cars.
What this means for buyers and exporters
- MPVs and SUVs are Indonesia's speciality. Seven-seat family cars built for Asian roads are the core of the export business, so buyers looking for that segment have plenty of choice.
- Parts and kits are the growth area. Component and CKD exports are rising much faster than finished cars, opening opportunities for parts buyers and assemblers abroad.
- Watch the Middle East and Latin America. Brands are pushing beyond ASEAN, and markets such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE are increasingly important.
- Check brand and model by HS code. Cars (8703), pickups (8704) and parts (8708) have different buyers, so shipment data at 8-digit level helps you find the right partners.
